Delivers a Spectacular Return to the Gauteng Skies

After a three-year absence, the Rand Airport Airshow made its highly anticipated return on Sunday, 30 August 2026, bringing aviation enthusiasts, photographers, families and thrill-seekers together for a memorable day of flying action.

The aviation community warmly welcomed the airshow's return, with Rand Airport once again becoming a hive of activity as visitors gathered to watch aerobatics, formation flying, historic aircraft, helicopters, skydivers, and high-energy displays.

🛩️ A Programme Packed With Variety

One of the biggest strengths of the 2026 Rand Airport Airshow was the variety of aircraft and display acts.

The Puma Flying Lions Aerobatic Team made two appearances during the day, allowing spectators to experience the team's trademark sound, precision and formation flying.

The team comprised: Ellis Levin • Arnie Meneghelli • Deon Raath • Nigel Hopkins. However, the Display was only a 3-ship, with some pilots rotating during the two displays.

Their second performance formed part of the day's closing attractions and was one of the highlights for spectators.

🚁 More Than Just Aerobatics

The flying programme offered considerably more than traditional aerobatic displays.

Skydivers opened the airborne entertainment, followed by helicopter displays, formation flying and specialist demonstrations.

The SAPS Air Wing was also part of the programme, providing spectators with an opportunity to see the operational side of aviation alongside the entertainment displays.

The Bell 222 and Gazelle added further variety, demonstrating the versatility of rotary-wing aircraft.

📸 A Photographer's Paradise

For aviation photographers, the return of the Rand Airport Airshow was particularly welcome.

With aircraft operating against the backdrop of Rand Airport, there were opportunities throughout the day to capture formation passes, aerobatics, helicopter operations, historic aircraft and close-up aircraft movements.

The variety of aircraft meant photographers were constantly looking for the next shot.

One particularly memorable moment was the sight of aircraft forming a heart in the sky, creating a picture-perfect moment for spectators and photographers alike.

Perhaps the biggest success of the 2026 event was simply seeing the Rand Airport Airshow return.

The last event was held in 2023, leaving a noticeable gap in Gauteng's airshow calendar.

The enthusiastic response from visitors demonstrated that there remains a strong appetite for aviation events in the region. Crowds gathered around the display area, while photographers and aviation fans made the most of the opportunity to see a wide variety of aircraft operating from Rand Airport once again.

The Rand Airport Airshow 2026 successfully marked the return of one of Gauteng's much-loved aviation events.

With a diverse flying programme featuring aerobatic teams, historic aircraft, helicopters, skydivers and formation displays, combined with food, entertainment, vehicles and family activities, the event delivered a full day of aviation entertainment.

The 2026 event demonstrated that Rand Airport still has an important place on South Africa's airshow calendar.

After a three-year break, the Rand Airport Airshow was back — and judging by the enthusiasm of those attending, aviation fans will be hoping they won't have to wait another three years before the skies above Rand Airport are filled with the sound of aircraft once again.
